Senior Pastor

Amanda Gordon

What brought you to Ames First UMC?
On January 19, 2021, while Rev. Ron Carlson and my husband, Adam, were messaging about hockey, he asked if would ever consider serving in the Iowa Conference of The UMC.  We went to seminary with Ron and he was serving as Dean of the Cabinet at the time.  I never had plans to leave Mississippi.  But, that question led to a Zoom call, lots of prayer, and additional discussion.  Adam and I felt God was leading us to serve in the Iowa Conference and the bishop and cabinet appointed me to Ames FUMC (and Colo UMC and Collins UMC).

Where did you grow up?  Pearl, Mississippi

What prior and/or current jobs have you had?
I have a BSE in Mathematics and taught high school math for two years then worked for Woodmen of the World Life Insurance for a year; during that year, I felt called to ministry.  While in seminary, I served as a chaplain intern.  After seminary, I served as the Associate Pastor of New Albany FUMC (MS) for four years and the Pastor of Minor Memorial UMC (Walls, MS) for eleven years.

What can you tell us about your education?
I received my BSE in Mathematics from Delta State University in Cleveland, MS (Home of the Fighting Okra!) and my MDiv from Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, MO.

What is your favorite thing about Ames First?
Seeing the smiles on faces while greeting people after worship.

What is your favorite something else?
I love bunnies and we currently have five housebuns who were all rescues. Fettuccine, Macaroni, Noodle, Ravioli and Gnocchi! I am a fan of the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs.  I LOVE all the Rocky (and Creed) movies, and my favorite Scripture is Isaiah 43:1-7.
